Abby’s Story

As told by Abby’s owner:

I have had Abby since she was a puppy, and she is now 5. She is my constant companion and my emotional support dog, per my doctor. I live by myself so Abby is everything to me. I had back surgery 2 years ago and was just ready to start getting back out when Covid hit. Abby is what has motivated me to get out and do things.

Last spring Abby was outside chasing birds when she suddenly started limping. She had a complete tear of her right leg cruciate ligament and needed surgery to repair it. At that time I applied for assistance from what was then Bandit’s BandAid Inc.  Thanks to the organization, her surgery was done in March of 202,1 and after a few months she was back walking on the injured leg once again. And since the surgeon told me that it was very possible that her other leg would suffer a similar injury in the future, I purchased an insurance play that would cover a substantial portion of the cost of a TPLO surgery for the other leg.

I did notice that Abby did not want to go back to walking as much as she did before her injury, which made it more difficult for me to keep weight off her. And then one day when she was outside she sat down and would not get up. I had to carry her back to our place. When she continued to refuse to get up and walk I took her to the ER, where she saw a critical care specialist who diagnosed her with another torn cruciate ligament as the surgeon had predicted.

Although I did have the insurance plan, the cost of the emergency visit and surgery were about double the amount that the insurance would cover. So once again I applied for assistance from Bandit’s K9Care and they were able to assist with the balance.  Abby had her second TPLO surgery, and this time her ligament had ruptured completely.  After being on crate rest for a few weeks of recovery she was able to take small walks, and at her 8 week check up I was told she was healing beautifully and just about ready to resume her regular life once again!
